Studying Fashion in South Korea with American College Experience [FIT SUNY KOREA]

Hello !

It's been years since I last posted something, but I thought of getting back to blogging since I feel like I have so many things to share, yet I don't feel most comfortable talking about it in a Youtube video. Well, maybe someday I would, but for now, I will just share them in words.

The last time I wrote here was in middle school. I am in my first year of university now. I entered an American university in Korea called the Fashion Institute of Technology. It is the top fashion business school in New York, in America, and in the world. They are under the State University of New York (SUNY) and its main campus is located in the heart of Manhattan, New York City.

LOCATION

The campus in South Korea however, is located near the port of Incheon, around 30 minutes away from the Incheon International Airport by car, or an hour by bus. It is quite far from the center points of Seoul like Gangnam, Hongdae, or Myeongdong. A bus stop or the subway near our campus provides transport, however, it takes from 1.5 hours to 2 hours to get there.

So it is a comfortable and peaceful location to study. It is specifically located in Songdo, Yeonsu area where there are Yonsei universities located 1 km away from our campus. The area of FIT Korea itself has some neighboring universities such as Stony Brook University (which is also under SUNY), Utah, Ghent, and also George Mason which provides broader ranges of major options.

While FIT New York provides many major, FIT Korea only has two: Fashion Business Management (FBM) and Fashion Design (FD). They only provide 2 years of education in Korea for Associates Degree (AAS), with an option of another 2 years in New York to get your Bachelors Degree (BA). This 2+2 program is really nice for you guys that want to get both experiences, studying in Korea, and also America. It is also cheaper as living cost in Korea is not as expensive as in Manhattan.

HOUSING

Students have to stay on campus for 1 year as a residential college (RC) requirement. The dorms are provided by the Incheon Global Campus (IGC), together with all 4 other universities (SBU, Utah, Ghent, and George Mason) in the complex. Second-year students can choose to live outside the campus, or stay in dorms. Most students choose to stay as it only takes less than 5 minutes of walk to get into classes.

There are two types of housing available: single rooms or double rooms. Single rooms are located in the B housing building. Single room means you have your own room for yourself, with your own single bed, desk, closet, bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. It is more convenient as you can have everything for yourself, but the room is very cramped as the walls of the bathroom narrow down the entry of the room.

Double rooms are located in A housing building. Double room means you have to share with someone. You can either choose (request) your roommate, or it is randomized based on your preference. A questionnaire on your studying habits, sleeping habits, drinking/smoking habits will be done when you apply for housing. The size of the double room is bigger and more breathable overall. There are two single beds, two desks, two closets, two windows for each person. There is no barrier or divider between the two areas. If you are sensitive to sounds or require a lot of privacy, I don't recommend you taking the double dorms.

When you enter the room, you'll step into an area where you take off your shoes as it is the tradition in Asia to take of your shoes before you enter the house. There is a four-level shoe rack on your left with a lengthy mirror on top. A couple steps into the room, there will be a separate toilet & sink+bathroom area. On your left, you'll be able to see the sink with a mirror, and when you look inside, you'll see the shower with a blurred glass door. The shower has better pressure than the one in single dorms. Do note that there's no door to this area so it might be very awkward at first when you get to know your roommate. On the right side of the hallway, there's a door to the toilet.
